My 2005 Acura TL’s Cracked Dash
Yes, I have a 2005 Acura TL. The TL has been a great car and I’m up to 342,352 miles! A fews years back I moved into a very hot area of S. CA and had to park my car in the driveway for almost a year. During that time my dash begun to crack and got worse over time. In addition to cracking, I started hearing noise in the car but at first couldn’t pin point where it coming from. To my surprise I finally figured out it was the dash area (more on this later).
Solution
Once the got tired of looking at my cracked dash I finally started looking for a solution. I found a place that does unbelievable restoration called Just Dashes. Just Dashes is perfect for someone restoring a car but costs too much for someone like me that just doesn’t want to see those cracks anymore.
Next, I found a dash cover on Amazon and I ordered it. This was a bit of a mistake because I did’t notice that it came in a light gray and I needed black. So I started searching again on Amazon and I found DASHskin. I noticed that unlike the first one I ordered from another company on Amazon that this one had more coverage. In addition to the top of the dash it also covered a bit more of the sides of the center console and over the glove box so I ordered it.
Once it arrived I carefully unpacked it and did a test by placing it over my existing dash and I was very impressed and how good it looked and how well it fit. Keep in mind that I was not in communication with DASHskin, they had not reached out to me for a product review. Also, I wasn’t doing the review for them, I reviewed it because I like it. I payed for it and didn’t tell them I was going to review it.
Installation
To prepare for the install I watched a few of DASHskin videos and that was very helpful. It’s not a complicated product to install and is really very simple. Basically, clean your dash, silicone the underside of the DASHskin dash cover and place it over your existing dash. Okay, it’s a little more complicated than this but not by much. A few other things to consider is once the dash cover is in place, you’ll want to place something with some wight on it to keep it pressed down evenly while the silicone dries. Also, for me tape did not work on the forward facing parts that needed some pressure to hold them in place. For this I grabbed some of my camera gear like articulating arms and my pair of telescoping walking sticks to hold the rest in place. Other things that could be used might be an adjustable shower curtain rod, piece of wood, cardboard, etc. Important Note: Try to NOT USE TAPE. First off, tape hardly stuck to anything but worse it leaves a residue that you’ll have to spend time cleaning off.
The Results Are In
Once the dash was installed and all the weights and tension rods were removed I gasped at how good it looked! My sister (helper) and I both couldn’t believe how good it looked. And there is a BONUS! Once I took my car our for a ride I noticed all that creaking noise was gone or at least 90% of it. This was unexpected but very welcomed.
The Good
Low cost, quick and easy install solution for hiding a crack dash. The DASHskin Covers will almost give you back the original look and feel of a new dash. DASHskin covers are made in America and come with a life time warranty.
The Bad
DASHskin covers might cost a little more than their competitors but in my opinion you get more coverage making the extra cost worth it. Once the install is done you might find a few spots that will need more silicone. This is not DASHskins fault but it would be nice if they supplied a couple of extra nozzles that are longer and thinner to help you get into those hard to reach places.
Overall
I highly recommend DASHskin covers. They are super easy to install, made in America and come with a lifetime warranty but most of all they are an affordable solution and they look great!
