Could The Ride1Up Prodigy XC Be The Perfect E-bike?
The Prodigy XC arrived and right out of the box I could tell there was something special about it. Not only did it look great with it’s color changing chameleon gloss paint job but I noticed a lot of other items that were different. The frame was slim and lighter than expected. It has a very small display but at the press of a button it manages to give you all the information you will ever need. Unlike a lot all the e-bikes I’ve reviewed thus far with rear hub motors, the Prodigy has a Mid Drive Motor! The motor is only 250w but gets up to 28mph just as fast as any of my other e-bikes with 750 rear hub motors. There is no throttle! How is this going to work without a throttle? If you don’t mind pedaling, the Prodigy works very well without a throttle. Surprisingly, the Prodigy is equipped with 4 piston hydraulic brakes! As for suspension this XC version of the Prodigy has a front air shock with lockout. Thinner, knobby tires on this e-bike are great for street and light trail riding too. To my surprise this e-bike is setup for a seat dropper post with a mechanical remote that can have its cable routed cleanly through pre-drilled out holes in the frame. All of this plus its performance could be the perfect e-bile to some.
But…
While the Prodigy XC might be perfect for some it might not be for others. The lack of a throttle will mean that you will always have to rely on your own power and power assist from the bike. To be more exact, to make this e-bike move you will always have to pedal. Personally, I love this. It feels more like a standard bike but with assist which is exactly what it’s meant to be. This type of e-bike will be great for people that are making the switch from a traditional street bike to an e-bike and want to continue to get exercise and feel the burn. Don’t get me wrong, the pedal assist on this e-bike is excellent and will give yo all the help you need. You decide how much assist you need and when you need a lot, the Prodigy XC won’t disappoint. Now, if you have problems with your knees, hips or anything else that detours you from pedaling then you might want to check out another e-bike from the Ride1Up lineup like their Turris (see below for my video review of the Turris).

The Good
Okay, there is a lot to list here! The Chameleon Gloss paint, light frame, larger 4 piston hydraulic brakes with 180mm disc brake rotors, knobby tires, mid drive motor, bright display, excellent pedal assist, front air shock and pre-drilled holes for mounting a seat dropper post with a cable remote.
The Bad
Not much to list here but I’ll try. The seat could be a little more comfortable. Lack of throttle will mean that it may not be good for people that don’t want to do a lot of pedaling. No integrated rear light.
Overall
This has got to be one of the most awesome e-bikes I’ve had the privilege to review. It’s a keeper! Where I hope this is leading up to with a next gen version of this e-bike would be the following: keep it exactly as it is but add an integrated rear brake light (maybe with built in turn signals) and add in rear suspension with a good quality air shock.
